What Would I Put Into Room 101?

You may or may not be familiar with the programme ‘Room 101’. As opposed to the Orwellian concept in its true form. For these purposes I refer to a BBC Programme, which started out as a radio programme hosted by the hilarious Paul Merton for some time. With the equally funny Frank Skinner taking the reigns in later productions.

I think Paul Merton will be heading a radio series of the show again soon. Which will no doubt be brilliant. As he has such a quick wit.

What Is Room 101

The concept is that guests are asked to choose three things they would like to be placed into Room 101 and why. Mock ups illustrating their choices are humorously displayed. If their argument is convincing enough, in it goes down the shoot. Never again to see the light of day. Well for the thirty minutes of that episode in any case!

There used only to be one guest. Now there are three competing for top shoot slot! The look of absolute satisfaction on their faces on the victory! Their choices are broad and often absurd, but highly entertaining.

What Would I Like To Put In Room 101?

Well, how long have you got? Firstly I would like to put the following three responses in. Which are:

  • FYI
  • It’s a given
  • Go figure

My reasons are. That although I can dish out sarcasm or dry humour with the best of them, I find these phrases beyond the point that which is funny. I almost lost it when the term ‘FYI’ was used in a response in a formal email this year. It degenerated from then on. I won’t bore you with the details, or post an exposé. But it was exasperating and incredibly patronising.

Whilst still on our home search, groan. My husband pings properties to me to look at at my leisure to save me being bombarded or cognitively overloaded. I suggested ‘FYI’ as a ping intro. Big mistake. As my husband had cautioned, it read as down right rude. So we have altered the intro to ‘HAGAT ‘. Have a gander at this! It works.

The other two of my choices are equally throw away replies which I find lazy, and impolite. What do they actually mean?

  • You’re clearly a twit
  • Find your abacus
  • I can’t be bothered

Convincing enough?

One More Item For Room 101

I have one more item I would like to see put into Room 101. Which goes to the other extreme. Yes, I know it should only be three. That being:

• Snarky and unconsidered responses on social media.

Need I say more. I have come so close to shutting down a social media profile more than once recently, following several unwarranted lectures. My finger gingerly hovers over the ‘deactivate‘ button. I then opt for ‘unfollow‘, ‘avoid‘, ‘block‘ or ‘I really must leave *said social media space (*tick where appropriate), but I will just avoid it instead so as not to offend anyone’ button.

Why can’t people be nice, and a bit more humble. Beginning to sound like Toy Story! And instead of going into a tome of why you are a wrong and clearly an uninformed idiot. Just say ‘thank you, that’s helpful‘, ‘I take your point‘, ‘you may be right’ or ‘I hadn’t considered that‘. Even if it’s not. Have I done it myself?

Closing Thoughts

Miles of bunting could be created from the red flags mass produced on social media! I might just do that as a social experiment. However, I’m not sure how long said bunting would last in inclement weather. Lol! Let’s face it, there’s an infinite supply. On second thoughts, no thank you. Can I go to sleep now please.*Written at 3am!

Aaah. Is social media just one big social experiment? Help. It’s George Orwell again! Far too deep for this early in the morning. As you all groan, ‘Penny has finally twigged‘!

One of the big life lessons I learnt is that the ‘law’ isn’t about right and wrong it’s about legalism. Put another way a vehicle for lawyers to make huge amounts of money
