Fledgey The Wood Pigeon

We have recently been playing host to two fledging Wood Pigeons and their caring parent. The Columba palumbas. We see quite a few here, due to our proximity to the nearby wood. And over many years have enjoyed feeding from the expanse of Ivy. Which sadly due to decrepit fencing, a neighbour had to remove. I was heartbroken. I loved seeing the Pigeons balancing to enjoy the fruits of the Ivy.

But, due to the development currently ongoing. There local habits have changed somewhat further. With our visitors having nested in a neighbours’ Hawthorn tree. Unheard of.

Two Fledglings

Having watched the parent masterfully feed two growing Pigeons. It looked positively painful. The parent became less visible. And we were down to two fledglings wandering about the garden looking a bit lost. Practising pecking at anything. With the two also vying for top spot on the swing seat.

Then sadly we were down to one fledgling. Which I fondly called ‘Fledgey’. Hoping its sibling has simply matured enough to move on.

Here’s Fledgey mooching around and having a preen. Their colouring is subtle, yet beautiful.

Fledgey’s visit became less frequent. I was very concerned. I have been captivated seeing Fledgey nestling in the grass and sleeping on the patio. Don’t you know there’s a cat around!! Princess T (sighthound royalty, we being her mere slaves) obviously creating a sense of security. As she will promptly see any cat off and quite vocally too!

Bath Time

To my delight, Fledgey popped back for a bath. Young Wood Pigeons are so fluffy and beautiful. And make the most adorable movement when settling, along with stretching one leg out at a time under their outstretched wing whilst doing their housekeeping business.

After a good splash in the bath. Fledgey happily relax on a shelf in the garden. And that is the last time I saw lovely Fledgey.

Closing Thoughts on Fledgey

Stay safe dear Fledgey. It has been an absolute delight and pleasure observing you enjoy the garden completely at ease. Fly safe and enjoy autumn. As game shooting is now banned in the nearby wood, hopefully your life will be a longer lived and enjoyed. Pop back any time!
